At last someone has come up with the courage to tackle one of the most insidious epidemics in modern life. When men leave their families, physically or emotionally, society feels the destructive ripples for generations to come. Callander and Travis do not claim to have all the answers to this complex problem but they begin a dialogue and offer unique insights that must be heard. We have swept this one under the carpet too long.
—Dean Edell, MD, author of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Healthiness

When John W. Travis, MD, lauded as one of the founding fathers of the wellness movement, became a parent, he was shocked to discover how unprepared he was for coping with the emotional challenges of parenthood. Now, his wife and colleague, Meryn Callander, shares the story of their confident plunge into parenthood and the subsequent unraveling of that confidence, as they discovered themselves floundering, exhausted, and struggling to deal with the challenges confronting them.

Why Dads Leave reveals the cultural and generational forces that are colluding to create an unacknowledged epidemic of disappearing dads—fathers leaving their families, physically or emotionally, soon after the birth of a child. Nearly twenty years in the making, this book provides insights and practical ways of preventing and healing the insidious and devastating impact of this dynamic.

Beautifully written, compassionate, and unflinchingly honest, Why Dads Leave offers understanding and hope for men—and the women who love them.

Why Men Leave speaks to the heart of what it means to nurture society and community at its most basic roots—mothers and fathers. A very important book.
—Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom
Most songs are about getting your man. This book is about keeping your man—especially after a child comes along.
—Naomi Judd, Emmy Award–winning singer/songwriter and author of Naomi's Breakthrough Guide 20 Choices to Transform Your Life

An amazing book on a truly important topic.
—John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution

To say that this book could change human history is not an overstatement. In fact, were it heeded, this book could change our species itself—and definitely for the better.
—Joseph Chilton Pearce, author of Magical Child and Crack in the Cosmic Egg

A book few, if any of us men, who have married at an early age, raised a family for some years, and then left to pursue whatever dreams compelled us, should or can afford to miss. I am one of those written about, so I know what my journey has cost me, as well as given to me, and what it has cost the family I left.
—Fred Alan Wolf, PhD, author of Taking the Quantum Leap and featured in What the Bleep Do We Know?

Fathers are more than sperm donors. Father-absence is a huge waste of human energy, caring, and love. Evidence suggests that the more love kids receive, the more likely they are to grow up bigger, stronger, and smarter. It’s time we faced the inconvenient truth that fathers are a crucial part of the parenting equation, as Callander so compellingly shows.
—Larry Dossey, MD, author of Healing Words

Great Book! When one is looking for a mate this book gives the number one escape from men prone to postpartum depression. If you can read the book before you choose a partner. It's books like these that save lives. Thank you!

It's important to know when others are reading minds and condemning you, you will know them by their fruits. People that acknowledge the water and not the blood; people who acknowledge the father and not the Son; people who deny the power of the blood. And we call that antichrist which will be partakers in hell. And we don't wish that on anyone. People who preach turn from sin so they can feel better about themselves and create clicks.

Just turn to faith and rest. Acts 13:39; John 14:1; Eph. 6:16. Lots of love, peace and kindness to all you dad's out there.

Why Dads Leave eBook Meryn Callander John Travis Gabor Mate Reviews

Society's fabric is built on relationships, and our 'known' relationships start with a partnership at conception and endure in various forms even after death. What better place to contribute to the well-being of the world than to explore and to understand with such intense and desperate desire the `seen' and mostly `unseen' parent dynamic. A dynamic which impacts directly on our children who then forge their own relationships influenced largely on their experiences at home.
As a Dad/Husband/Man I have been in the middle of some of those unresourceful feelings and emotions endured in what is described as trying to be the best Dad/Husband/Man as possible with all the resources, qualification and experience that one has at hand, but not understanding why it was still not hitting the mark?
The depth of research and analysis immersed with the real-life examples of the complexities of inter-relationships personally makes this piece of work not only intellectually stimulating, comprehensible, practical but most importantly emotionally applicable - the type of knowledge and info that I wished I had earlier, but can still do so much with now to heal, patch and rejuvenate my relationships.
Congratulations to Meryn Callander and Jack Travis for this timely and important project. After having read an early draft and now Chapter 1 `taster' of the finished product, I can only now appreciate the time, effort and courage that have gone into it.
This book is of tremendous value. I recommend it to everyone really.
very insightful. i found myself quoting this daily. buying copies as gifts. read this if you are childrearing. Brought me to a better place about my own parents divorce 30 years ago!
Within our culture just about everything that matters boils down to relationships. If that is so, then understanding them and how they are formed is significant to our success individually, as well as our society. Why Dads Leave is a definitive piece of work which illuminates the subtle, the profound, the unconscious and the sublime of how relationships are formed from the womb onward and their impact for generations to come. This book 'should' be required reading for all parents, expectant parents, birth and healthcare professionals and anyone who cares about the direction of our evolution and the role we play in it. Patrick Houser, author Fathers-To-Be Handbook at FathersToBe.org Fathers to Be Handbook
Incredibly insightful book! Reading this was like having a looking glass into the inner workings of my husband and the subsequent effect on myself and our marriage since our daughter was born. The occurrence of the syndrome of Male Postpartum Attachment Disorder (MPAD) was defined and described clearly and then backed up with great amounts of research and complementary material. The circumstances of how it occurs were also defined in great detail.
Honestly - reading the book was like having the light switch turned on. I had been so confused about why my husband seemed to be deeply and unconsciously depressed despite the fact that everything external in his/our life was seemingly going great. The book illuminated the reasons and I knew with a deep inner resonance that "this" was what was happening for us - MPAD.
I feel great appreciation for the work of Meryn Callander and John Travis in dedicating so much time to collating this substantial body of work for the benefit of families.
This book is a treasure. It's a beautifully crafted, honest, and clearly articulated exploration about what happens when partners become parents and why so often dads disappear emotionally or physically in the early years after the birth of a child.

There is no judgment in the exploration-only a clear-minded and empathetic exploration of this pandemic that so seriously affects and undermines the very fabric of our culture.

As a life and wellness coach, I've been waiting for a book like this for many years. Yes, my coaching is effective in helping people move through their obstacles to achieve their objectives, but it's so much easier when the client has a readable resource that gives him or her a realistic palette of possibilities, and also gives us a shared language. This book is just such a resource.

Once we see clearly, it's impossible to not see. This book is a life changer. It so compassionately and factually parts the curtains that we can never completely put the curtains back again.
