A Place Called Home Jo Goodman Books

This is more of a novel than a contemporary romance, but I'm not saying that's bad. But if you are looking for the typical: 1. love-at-first-site, followed by 2. heartbreaking misunderstanding -or- either/both characters thinks the other couldn't possibly feel the same way, ending with 3. Resolution of all conflicts and a (quick) happy ending, preferably in under 200 pages; well, you probably won't like this book.

Not only is Goodman a skilled and talented writer, but her personal professional experience is quite evident in the factual detail of the plot/ subject matter. The characters' personalities unfold slowly and realistically, their love develops gradually in spite of their immediate attraction, just as it does in real life. Neither are Polyanna perfect individuals; but their personal moments of self-revelation just felt authentic. The book is filled with humor as well as poignancy. Sometimes leaving a reader with a promise of a good beginning is better than a they all lived happily ever after fairy tale ending.

I read to be entertained, but I have to admit I also love when a book makes me feel as if I've learned something about life and even myself that I didn't recognize before. I guess we can learn something at any age. This is a go back to book.

A Place Called Home Jo Goodman Books Reviews

My wife reads tons of books so we typically purchase large quantities of books over the length of the year & she shares her books with others as well as they with her
Fell in love with this author after reading If His Smile is Wicked. Jo Goodman is such a talented writer. I am busy accumulating all her books and have most of them already. If you enjoy historical romance without all the sleeze then this is the author for you. Her plots are believable and grab you from page one.
I like the author.
I'm a fan of Jo Goodman and this is a great book. I bought this one blindly because I enjoyed her historical western romances so much, so I was surprised to realize it was a contemporary. Still, it's a great story, great writing and there's plenty of Goodman's magic on the pages.
Jo Goodman reveals on her website that she wrote this book in 2001 but decided to publish now. Since it's a contemporary, major tweaks were needed where current events and technology were referenced to update it from 2001 to 2011, but the basic story remains the same.

This is not your typical contemporary romance with the hunky alpha male flirting outrageously with the beautiful sassy heroine, banter with sexual innuendo, where it's just a question of where and when they'll fall into bed, end of story. This is a real story with a very realistic feel to the romance and the rest of what is going on around it, and, as such, may not appeal to all romance readers.

Goodman is a licensed professional counselor who says she enjoys most her work with children and families. This is very much reflected in this CR. The story's hero, Mitch Baker, is a political cartoonist with a beta personality. Heroine Thea Wyndham is a hot shot businesswoman. Both have significant others at the beginning of the story. Both were friends of Kate and Gabe Reasoner but are not friends to each other, merely acquaintances. Both had agreed to be joint guardians of Kate and Gabe's children should anything happen to the parents, both of them never supposing this would really happen.

But, of course, it did. The parents are killed in a traffic accident and Mitch and Thea are left to pick up the pieces. Mitch is a nurturer, Thea is not. Mitch takes the kids into his house and his life as a surrogate dad begins. Thea seems to want to stay apart from it all, except for the occasional visit, the giving of gifts, and financial support.

As you keep reading the story, you'll learn more and more about Thea's past and troubled present and it becomes clear why she has been standoffish about the children and Mitch. It's not an easy read. Thea's history is not fun, sexy and romantic. But, IMO, it's a worthwhile read. Goodman has always been one of my favorite romance writers and here she's just a writer, giving us a story about orphaned children, foster children, unhappy childhood and its effects into adulthood, caring and understanding people, the adjustments formerly single and childless instant parents must make to their lives, the adjustments children have to make when they lose both parents, and as a bonus we have a romance between 2 adults which develops realistically and rather beautifully.

Mitch may be a tad too perfect in this story (with an occasional lapse into being a jerk) but I loved him and was wishing every kid who loses his/her parents could find a Mitch to take care of him/her. This is not a sexy romance (although it is not lacking in hot sex scenes). It's a romance with real character and real feeling, well written and full of great dialogue.
This was my first Jo Goodman book and it will not be my last, specially if she writes more contemporaries. The characters in this story feel real and the plot is interesting and doesn't stay just on the surface; real problems are dealt with and yet Goodman has done it with a light touch. There is great dialogue and humor and even the "villains" (not really villainous) are true to their characters and people whose actions make sense. The character development and the overall plot kept me reading through the night. Loved this book!
I sincerely hope Ms Goodman will write some more contemporaries, I can't wait to read them!
I decided to give this book a go after reading two other books by this author (Steadfast Heart and In Want of a Wife) that I really enjoyed.
Unfortunately this book falls very short in comparison. It lacked the beautiful, heartwarming tenderness that I've come to expect from Goodman. Moreover, the character development felt rushed and contrived, while the book itself felt like it was dragging on with uninteresting side plots.
I wish I hadn't read it, because now I'm reluctant to try any more of this author's titles. And after the previous two books I read from her, I didn't think it was possible.
