Read this for my book club – it's a stunning, thoughtful, and expertly subtle book that often left me unsettled, but in a familiar and interesting way. Like being reminded of a strange and maybe painful memory you haven't thought of in years and never told anyone. Indeed, nearly every protagonist is deeply concerned with the past, and it's not always nostalgia that drives this as much as an attempt to sort through what got them to the present; sometimes this looks like mourning, or like regret, or like resentment.

Brinkley's writing is skillful, and he treats his characters with both tenderness and unflinching precision and honesty. This is a wonderful book, and one of the few written by men that examine masculinity and misogyny without reifying them.

The first story is somehow the weakest in the collection, in my opinion, but this is a fantastic collection overall.
