It's not the first time I've read this book, and probably it won't be the last. After all, I had the paper version and when I thought I was done with it, suddenly I want to read it again... Well, why not? This book belongs to a series about members of a family, the Donovans, all of them involved in dealing with precious stones. The books can be read independently, but as we'll be seeing one or other Donovan in all of them, I'd say that if you like this book, go for the others. I have my favorites, but it doesn't matter. Some will say that if you read one you read all, because this writer, like many others that write lots of books, has a certain style, which includes catch phrases that she repeats and anyone can recognize. Sometimes it bugs me, but this is the price to pay when you choose this kind of book. You won't exactly expect originality. But she knows her craft and you won't find the awful errors so common in writing these days of publishing by the dozen. Definitely not a "your" when it should be 'you're'. And I say it as a non-native speaker. There's romance and suspense in this book (and in all of Lowell's stories), and that's all I ask to have a good time.Tags : Amber Beach (Donovan, Book 1) [Elizabeth Lowell] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <p align= center >Deadly secrets are buried on Amber Beach ... Amber Beach Donovan Book 1 Elizabeth Lowell 9780380775842 Books Reviews
This is the first Elizabeth Lowell novel I read and absolutley loved it! Enough of "everything" to keep me interested on many levels. I've gone on to reading the three remaining books in the Donovan Family series in a span of two weeks (all winners). I wonder how long it will take me to get through her other 50 some-odd titles? I'll know soon enough; I just bough my 9th Elizabeth Lowell book today!
Honor Donovan, jewelry designer and daughter of the founder of Donovan International, a company dealing in precious metals and gemstones, discovers that her brother Kyle is missing...along with a fortune in amber. Frantic with worry, Honor moves into Kyle's cottage on one of the San Juan Islands, and hires a local fishing guide, Jake Mallory, to help her search the island chain for her brother. Big, bad, hunky Jake is not, of course, a real fishing guide - although he loves to fish. Jake used to work for the Donovan company, brokering amber. He is also somewhat of a soldier of fortune. The Donovan brothers suspect that it is Jake, not Kyle, who has the stolen gems and a priceless Russian antiquity, as well. So it is in Mallory's best interest to find Kyle so that he can prove his innocence.
The two are pursued all over the Pacific islands by local cops, the Feds, international operatives and spooky intruders. The chemistry between Honor and Jake is explosive. They are a perfect match and their feelings for each other are as palpable as is their mutual attraction. There is romance and caring here as well as sex. And the dialogue between them is witty, with an edge. Honor is quite intelligent, creative and independent. We also get to meet other members of the Donovan clan - which is one of the most interesting and fun families ever.
The dangerous adventures and mishaps never seem to cease. The details about amber and the Russian antiquity, the "Amber Room," are fascinating. The San Juan Islands are so amazing that I am actually planning a vacation there. What more could one ask for in a good book? I highly recommend this as one of Ms. Lowell's best.
This is one of the first Elizabeth Lowell books I ever read. I felt such an emotional pull to Jake that I rapidly picked up the rest of the series. Jake is amazing! He is strong, capable, kind and intelligent.
Ok, so it’s the male characters I am most drawn too, I admit it. But wouldn’t it be great to have a few extra Jakes around just in case you needed to learn how to drive a boat or whatever!
I admit to finding comfort in the immersion into a good fantasy romance and Elizabeth Lowell is always there to provide the source, be it historic, fantasy, thriller, or mystery, she creates the perfect combination of characters and story to keep me interested. She adds just the right about of emotion and love to make the woman in me very content. I recommend her books, all of them.
Story could have been good but it was like listening to a textbook for what seemed like hours. Wait, it was hours. The story could have been interesting, but I did not want to learn to drive a boat, catch a fish or test lots of amber. Nor did I need a long lecture, or 2 or 3, on the geopolitics of the ex-Soviet Union. I kept listening and then yelling at my iPod as I drove. With about 3 hours to go and one more lecture, I pulled over and found another book to listen to. I will be returning this one.
As for the narrator, she was awful. In the beginning, she made a bit of an effort to differentiate at least the H and the h, but then everyone sounds the same, except for a few poorly done accents. Mostly she talked like she was in the library, then something goosed her up and she acted over the top for a minute or so. Then back to the library. I really hate it when all the men sound just like the women.
The story itself, while somewhat improbable, could still have been entertaining if about 3 hours of instructions had been cut out of it. My daughter has a copy of the book so I will skim it for the ending.
I read this novel many years ago and just bought it again on . It still holds up! The dialogue between Honor and Jake is really funny although sometimes the banter is a bit too sarcastic. The slow burn of their romance makes things so much more interesting. I love that there is a real problem to be solved, and you can tell that the author had done a LOT of historical research. And they're hunting for treasure as well! I enjoyed the idea of the Amber Room, such a good premise. Also, Jake is on my top 10 list for best love interests.
A few quibbles with Lowell's writing her stories are always like "guy tells girl not to do something, girl does something anyway because of her FEMALE INTUITION, and the guy has to go and save her." I also have to chuckle at how the author always makes all of the characters, even supporting ones, super, super hot and sexually aggressive. I wonder if that was just the trend at the time Lowell wrote this? Anyway, I don't feel like it really distracts from the excitement of the story. Overall, it's a fun little read.
