PRAISE for ALL THAT LIVES, CSIPoetry of sex, death and pathology, from poets and scientists
‘The poems are extraordinary. Desire and dementia, the death of the brain and the life of the body jostle in All that Lives. These poems provoke thought, shock with sadness, and revive. They are alive.’ Alison Brackenbury.
‘ ...ambitious lyric originality and the richness of its word-hoard as it gives a voice to foetal specimens in their cold jars.’ Carol Ann Duffy, Mslexia, on Litter of Moons.
‘Remarkable poems. Valerie Laws...dissects our relationships with the living, the demented and the dead with compassion, neuroanatomical detail, explicit eroticism and black humour.’ Susan Standring, editor of Gray’s Anatomy & Professor of Anatomy, KCL.
‘A poet brings a new vocabulary to pathological realities’ Graham P Mulley, British Medical Journal
‘Laws's images are vivid and the language rattles and sparks. ... she chooses her subjects carefully, seeking the intense and the pregnant within them and offering the reader something of the 'real' experience they contain.’ Praise for Valerie Laws from Poetry Review
‘The Incredible Shrinking Brain begins as a poem that meditates on the memory of joy and passing years. Sequentially words fade from the poem...Almost unbearably moving’ Steven and Hilary Rose, in The Lancet.
‘Laws manages to be heartfelt without seeming overly sentimental, and is witty without being irreverent.’ The Economist
ABOUT THE BOOK
CSI POETRY of sex, death and pathology, both funny and moving, tackles taboo subjects with cutting-edge science and rich sensuality. We trace the author’s personal journey from witnessing the deaths of loved ones, through residencies in pathology and neuroscience research institutes in her quest to understand the science of dying down to brain cell level, encountering strange specimens and conditions. Concurrently, her rediscovery of modern sex and post-divorce dating brings hilarious, earthy life to an unflinching collection which has already won many prizes and distinctions.

All That Lives CSI Poetry of Sex Death and Pathology eBook Valerie Laws
I was blown away by Valerie Laws latest collection. The material she writes about does not immediately strike one as having much poetic potential - deformed foetuses, dementia, pathology labs, the death of skin... all seem bleak and something we're all too happy to shut the door on, but Laws blows an incisive poetic tornado (can tornadoes be incisive?!) throughout 'All That Lives' - it is utterly stunning stuff. Buy it and be entranced, and inspired.Product details

This collection by Valerie Laws is teeming with authentic experience. The poems are underpinned by a real empathy with the business of living. Nothing is made sentimental but there is a genuine understanding of the fragility and strength of what it means to be human. This is a poetry collection that is assured, relevant and humane and makes you confident in the knowledge that poetry can still have a real voice in the world today.
